HCSD 3rd Edition - Walk of Gratitude

We hope you enjoy reading about the second edition in a series of HCSD Walks of Gratitude! Today we feature Bradley HS, Memorial MS, and the Innovative Learning Center (ILC). 

In today's society we are all so busy. We constantly are pushing ourselves and each other to do more and to be more. In our quest to #BeELITE, we often forget to stop and reflect and simply say "thank you". To pause and take the time to tell those that make our lives better that we appreciate them for all the little things and big things they do to enhance our journey.

Within the Hilliard City Schools, we focus on instilling a passion for growth in ourselves, our staff and our students. We push ourselves to #TheEdge each day to be the best for our students, colleagues, district, parents and the community we serve. We expect to be at the top of our profession. We push to be innovative, to take risk, to demonstrate a growth mindset and to stay above the line. We strive to provide a world class experience for our students that prepares them to be ready for tomorrow. We believe we have created this environment within our district because of the amazing staff that we have in front of our students each day. Those staff members all are relentless in their pursuit to #BeELITE in their classroom for their students.

So today we pressed pause and took time to simply say "thank you". To show gratitude for all the little and big things these professionals do each day to create a first class experience for our students. To let them know that they are appreciated and that their hard work does not go unnoticed. These teachers demonstrate a passion for growth which has created a classroom culture that promotes risk taking and fosters student growth both academically and socially! Hilliard Bradley High School

Rae Cunningham 

Mrs. Cunningham used her own time last spring transforming three courses into our new English 12 course that is a pilot for Bradley.  These teachers are very passionate about this work and it is directly benefiting students.  

Julie Rickert

Pam Worth 

Mrs. Worth used her own time last spring transforming three courses into our new English 12 course that is a pilot for Bradley.  These teachers are very passionate about this work and it is directly benefiting students.  

Jarrod Crocker 

Mr. Crocker's classroom is constantly “in motion”.  Students are working at different paces and on different material depending on where they are in the curriculum.  Mr. Crocker constantly differentiates which allows those advanced students to move ahead and those that may be struggling to receive more intentional, one- on- one attention.  

Linsey Stiles 

Mrs. Stiles has worked to gather a student needs assessment that has allowed her to determine the greatest need in terms of mental health in our building.  She is now using that data to create groups that will provide those students in need the tools they need to feel success mentally at Bradley.

Hilliard Memorial Middle School

Heather Moody- Heather continues to learn, grow and be a model for her colleagues in the area of curriculum revision, collaboration with other staff members, student voice and choice, grading and rethinking homework.  She constantly examines her practice to better meet the needs of her students and to allow them to show mastery.  She works collaboratively with other math teachers both inside and outside our building while leading our math department at MMS.

Jean Shackle- Jean is a veteran teacher who is continually open to new ways to meet the needs of all students.  She has embraced Blended Learning, the workshop model and all other district initiatives and serves as a leader and model for her fellow Language Arts teachers.  Jean served on the Vendor Assessment committee and has been instrumental in helping her colleagues, both inside and outside her department, in implementing the STAR Assessment and interpreting the results.  She continuously looks for ways to help students grow and meet their goals. 

Mark VanKirk- Mark serves as our Social Studies Department leader and has helped guide his department in the area of student voice and choice.  Their work with Learning Menus served as a model to other departments at MMS and they continue to look for ways to refine and adapt.

Julie Volbert- Julie has fully embraced the R Factor concepts into her work with her students in Family and Consumer Science.  She has incorporated R Factor Skills into her curriculum and continues to model and apply R Factors skills to her students’ everyday lives. 

Brandi Weibel- Brandi is a tireless worker who continuously searches for ways to reach her students.  She currently is working to apply the workshop model to her math classroom in an effort to intervene with students on a daily basis.  Brandi is a great collaborator and team player, while also pushing her colleagues to learn and grow.  She is also starting a Math Club this year to give students additional ways to push themselves and apply math. 

Innovative Learning Center

Troy Sayre

Troy is one of our online social studies teachers that teaches not only out of the ILC but also district wide.  Troy is deserving of recognition because he quietly goes through his day making an impact on students in a personalized way.  Troy’s approach to online is to provide students with a high quality educational experience while offering voice and choice in their learning.  He is continually looking to improve his courses by retooling them to include the latest technology tools for students to demonstrate their learning.  One of Troy’s unsung qualities is his willingness to be a resource for other online teachers and staff district wide as they work through their own canvas courses.  Mr. Sayre is a valued member of the team at the ILC.

Pam Antos

Pam is the poster teacher for what a growth mindset looks like in our profession.  Coming to us from the middle school level, Pam has taken the approach that she is going to constantly look for ways to improve because her students deserve nothing short of her best effort.  It’s been so exciting to watch Pam take on a new challenge each year and make it her own.  Whether she is teaching college level English classes in our College Jumpstart Network, starting a college symposium experience instead of a traditional assessment, or even jumping in on the ground floor of a new class called Project Discover she is always enhancing the student experience.  It’s been one of the highlights of the ILC to see Mrs. Antos play such a pivotal role in our culture and student experience. If you are searching for an advocate for all students and their unique needs,  look no further than Mrs. Antos. 

Ray Newsom

Ray brings a smile to your face as soon as you either meet him or even talk about him.  Mr. Newsom’s approach to his daily work with some of our most challenging cases at times is a refreshing combination of servant leadership and genuine care for individual students. As an intervention specialist at the ILC he is working with students in online courses, setting goals, and customizing the experience so they can each feel success.  He is always looking for ways to motivate his students, even if that means providing KFC as an inventive.  A staff favorite for his Funky Friday pants and diffusion of good spirits, Ray is a key member of our ILC culture. 

Zack White

Zack has taken over the LEAD program these past two years and developed a pathway for students to know they are cared for and can achieve success academically if they apply themselves.  The relationships he develops with his students can be looked upon as the sole reason he is having success with students that otherwise may not have found it.  The classroom walls do not contain some of his connections as he’s making students realize their potential and growth opportunities in social settings, work settings, or local fitness centers.  The impact Zack has had on one particular student cannot be overlooked as anything short of a Hollywood movie moment.  Mr. White displays our VBO’s as good as anyone in the district by standing up and owning it, having the power of the team in mind, and always having a passion for growth to get better.

Hilliard Darby High School

Allison Kruder - Allison worked to develop a Spanish course for native speakers.  This is a new pilot in our district that provides a very personalized and unique opportunity for our native speakers.  She is able to explore the content and enhance the learning experience for students with a different background. 

Adam Olsheski - Adam creates a safe and collaborative learning environment for some of our most difficult students.  He fosters an environment of trust with his students and he encourages students to take risks. A growth mindset culture is valued and embraced.   He is invested in his students and he genuinely cares for each student.  

Shawn Morris - Shawn’s use of technology in the classroom has provided meaningful experiences for student’s.  His students are highly engaged in meaningful and purposeful lessons.  In addition, Shawn has taken on a leadership role as a peer mentor to other teachers in the building. He assists Maria, our technology teacher, with professional development for implementation of technology with our new One2One initiative.

Nikki Henkel - Nikki creates a learning space that is inviting and designed to promote creativity, collaboration, critical thinking and communication.  This quarter she invited adults into her classroom and asked them to talk about their love for reading and reading for pleasure.   She provides meaningful and authentic opportunities for her students.

Valerie Kulic-Brown - Valerie is the master at promoting creativity and collaboration.  She creates meaningful and authentic opportunities for her students.  Students receive specific and immediate feedback, not only from her, but also from their peers.  Students are passionate and invested as they can create quality work that aligns with their interest.  Val has a high level of energy and she invites her students to share in the journey of learning and appreciation of art. 

“THE” Heritage Middle School

Brad McConkey - Brad exemplifies what it means to be a true professional. He continually takes on the most challenging situations and continues to build fantastic relationships with each of his students. He is relentless in his work to personalize science for his students, and he is the first to show up to the building and one of the last to leave.

MaryAnn Best - MaryAnn has embraced the workshop model and really works to make connections with her students.  She always has a ton of energy and compassion for her students.  She constantly demands more from herself and is always ready and willing to try something new.

Ann Bowen - Ann has classes at capacity each and every period of the day. She also spends her “free” time (her lunch) with students to ensure they grasp the concepts necessary to be successful in Spanish.  She embraces the energy that comes with a full classroom and creates a fun/safe environment that her students truly enjoy.  Ann is always striving to take risk to try something innovative in an effort to maximize the learning experience for all students.

Matt Burgei - Matt has created an environment where he students have started to embrace the idea of showing what they have learned in different and unique ways.  The best examples of this that I can think of is Matts most recent unit.  In order to show what the students have learned a couple of students used Mine Craft to explain what they learned while another baked a cake.  Each of these examples demonstrated his passion for personalized learning and his emphasis on creating a positive culture within his classroom.

Hilliard Station Sixth Grade

Jason Loudenslager - Jason is a model for best practice in mathematics as well as the importance of developing trusting relationships with students and staff.  He takes on district initiatives with an open mind and implements them into his classroom lessons with energy and integrity.  Jason is a positive role model not only to his students, but all people at Station.  His peers confide in him for support.  He works collaboratively with his colleagues to take on new pedagogical practices such as the workshop model and creating standard based rubrics in mathematics.  He goes above and beyond to contribute to experiences in and out of the classroom.

Joan Pitstick - Joan’s passion for learning is exemplified from the minute you walk into the classroom.  Her energy and hunger for students to learn is shown throughout the year.  Students are engaged and take ownership in their learning.  Joan took on a big initiative last year, along with her colleagues, by creating Standard Based rubrics for all social studies standards. The time and energy put into this is noteworthy, and exemplifies not only her passion for growth, but her capacity for leadership.

Joy Grubbs - Joy is an outstanding educator who goes above and beyond with her instruction and student performances.  When walking into the classroom during Music in Action, the students are in continuous “action” by singing, clapping, snapping, and moving while they transition from one concept to another.  Her choir does the same, and the productions put on by the students are energetic and emotional.  She has created a Swing Choir as an after school activity, giving all students the opportunity to sing and perform beyond the academic school day.  The show choir as made public performances at the Columbus Zoo as well.  Joy has a variety of visitors come to her classroom to observe and student teach through Capital University.  Joy is truly an outstanding educator and person.

Kelly Davis - Kelly has worked tirelessly and grown professionally over the last year taking on a new subject and diving into both social studies content and the use of mastery rubrics.  She sought out opportunities to collaborated throughout the school year and summer to create and align assessments to the newly developed mastery rubrics. She continues to ensure all learning opportunities allow students to demonstrate grade level expectations.

Lindsay Fisher - Lindsay is an open minded educator who is always ready and willing to take on new projects and initiatives that will benefit her students but herself and colleagues.  She had the amazing opportunity to lead 4 new language arts teachers to Station last year along with the support of the secondary literacy coach.  Her servant leadership has created a cohesive team that collaborates and reflects continuously throughout the year.  She along with her colleagues reinvented their instructional practices by taking on the workshop model and have become an exemplar for the building and district.

Hilliard Davidson High School 

Lindsay Limbacher and Erin Vance are our teachers in the life skills class. They LOVE our students! This year they have started a school store run by their students. Staff, parents and students have loved seeing them at the front door. Come stop by and pick up their hottest selling item, the iPad stylus! - Davidson Admin Team

Brad McKinley is an educator who goes above and beyond to help his students succeed.  He is caring and compassionate with all of his students and does an excellent job of communicating expectations with students and parents.  He is constantly working towards being innovative in his classroom to help his students succeed.  Brad is a valuable asset to the Davidson High School and community.- Davidson Admin Team

Sam Stille has taken the R Factor to another level.  Talk about a true team player!  Sam volunteered to build an R Factor curriculum, from scratch, that was used by Davidson’s R Factor teacher and student trainers at the beginning of the school year.  The lessons within the curriculum were outstanding and were chock full of engaging videos and activities.  Additionally, Sam has already created the materials we will use to roll out R 5 to our student body during Block Week in October.- Davidson Admin Team

Lisa Braun is a courageous teacher who exemplifies taking risks with her students in the classroom.  She partners with our technology teachers for innovative team learning experiences.  In addition, Lisa is an exceptional instructional leader as she employs: workshop model practices, student voice and choice, project based learning, mastery learning, and much more.  Most importantly, she blends instruction in order to personalize every student's educational experience. - Davidson Admin Team

Hilliard Weaver Middle School

The following teachers have shown a continued commitment to the implementation of instructional best practices in the area in which they teach. Their dedication to the HCSD school community and their unwavering belief in the culture of Weaver Middle School is essential to our collective success and these teachers demonstrate this day in and day out. 

Our Weaver teachers exemplify the Power of the Team by engaging themselves in meaningful collaboration with colleagues, demonstrate a Passion for Growth by being active participants in purposeful professional development and model their own success and failures in the teaching and learning environment by embracing the phrase, Stand Up and Own It.

At Weaver Middle School we have many teachers that continue to push themselves in all aspects of their work. Their service to our students and our parents is unwavering.

Hilliard Tharp Sixth Grade Building

Tharp would like to honor and recognize the outstanding best practices in teaching and learning implemented by our science data team who go above and beyond to create the strongest, most effective data team I have ever seen. They are leading the way with innovative best practices in science instruction while personalizing learning. An example of this would be the “Darby Creek Experience” they have created for every student at Tharp which fosters scientific inquiry, real life application and working with local community agencies to monitor the water quality of Darby Creek. HCSD Middle Level Spotlight #5 - Memorial Jaguars

This week we turn our attention to the dynamic leadership team at Memorial Middle School, Mr. Barry Bay and Mr. Jon Way.

Mr. Bay and Mr. Way have fostered a family-oriented school environment with a strong concentration on academics, character education and extra-curricular activities. Memorial has an excellent teaching staff, dedicated to assisting students in finding success.

Mr. Barry Bay

Mr. Bay is entering his 37th year in education and his 6th year as the principal at Memorial. Prior to leading the Jags, Mr. Bay spent 7 years as a Math teacher and coach at Chillicothe HS and 7 years as a Math teacher and coach at THE Hilliard High School.  Mr. Bay also spent 3 years as an Assistant Principal at Hilliard HS and Hilliard HS Transition Building. Mr. Bay served as the Athletic Director of Darby HS for 7 years and then moved to Heritage Middle School for 7 years as an Assistant Principal.

Mr. Bay attended Heidelburg University for his undergraduate degree. He then went on to THE Ohio State University for his master’s degree.

When asked his "why" for being an administrator he shared that it is, "To have a positive impact on students and staff". He hopes that all staff and students are able to integrate the R Factor skills into their daily lives during this school year. He is excited about the future of the Hilliard City Schools and all the amazing opportunities we are able to offer our students and staff to be ready for tomorrow. Mr. Bay loves being a part of the middle level team in Hilliard. He appreciates the teamwork amongst the group and the ability to share ideas so that we all continue to learn and grow.

Outside of school Mr. Bay enjoys spending time with his wife- Diana and their children- Jackson (18), Mackenna (16) and Keaton (8). Mr. Bay also like to exercise and participate in sports. On the weekends you can find him cheering on his favorite sports teams, THE Ohio State Buckeyes and the Cincinnati Bengals.


Mr. Jon Way

Mr. Way is entering his 21st year as an educator. Mr. Way has taught 3rd, 5th and 6th grades at two different schools in the Delaware City Schools. Mr. Way also served as an assistant principal at a 5/6 building for 1 year and then served as the principal at Conger Elementary for 1 year. Mr. Way then came to the Hilliard City Schools where he was the Brown Elementary Principal for 3 years.

Mr. Way attended Ohio Wesleyan University where he played football and earned his Bachelor of Arts degree. He then earned his Master of Arts in Curriculum and Instruction from Nova University and his Master of Arts in Educational Leadership from Concordia University. Mr. Way also earned his Superintendent Licensure from Miami University.

Mr. Way is passionate about working with people and helping children succeed. He is energized to be part of the Hilliard City School District and Memorial Middle School. When asked about this year he said, "This year presents new learning for me and learning on the Edge. I cannot wait to forge a new path and make a positive influence in my community".

Mr. Way shared three quotes that he uses to guide him daily:
"What they should teach in school. Only two things: 1. Solve interesting Problems 2. Lead". -Seth Godin
"A wise man can always be found alone; a weak man can always be found in a crowd". -Unknown

 "I never lose. I either win or learn". -Nelson Mandela

Mr. Way is a proud member of the Hilliard Community. He lives in Hilliard with his wife of 21 years, Dena. Dena is also a teacher in the Hilliard City Schools. She has served as a teacher at Darby High School for 21 years. They are proud parents of 3 wonderful children, Griffin -11yrs. old and attends Station 6th Grade Building; Grady- 9 yrs. old and Delaney-7 yrs. old. who are both proud students at Darby Creek Elementary.

Outside of school Mr. Way enjoys traveling, friends and family and sports. He is an avid fan of the Cleveland Browns, Cleveland Indians, Ohio Wesleyan Battling Bishops and THE Ohio State Buckeyes....in that order!

With Mr. Bay being a Bengals fan and Mr. Way being a Browns fan, the Battle of Ohio (October 23rd and December 11th) should be fun this year!

Middle Level Spotlight #4 - Hilliard Weaver Cats

This week we are excited to feature the leadership team from Hilliard Weaver Middle School! Mr. Craig Vroom and Mrs. Samantha Althouse combine their talents to lead an energetic and innovative school community. 

Mr. Craig Vroom

Mr. Vroom is entering his 23rd year in education. Mr. Vroom started his teaching journey in 1994 at Hilliard Crossing Elementary where he spent 5 years prior to moving to Hilliard Heritage for the next 2 years. After that, Mr. Vroom transitioned into school administration where he served as the Beacon Elementary Principal for 7 years. Mr. Vroom currently serves as the Principal of Weaver Middle School entering his 9th year of service with the CATS! Mr. Vroom attended Heidelberg University in Tiffin, Ohio where he earned his undergraduate degree. Mr. Vroom then went on to pursue his master’s degree at THE Ohio State University. 

When asked his "why" for becoming an administrator, Mr. Vroom shared that it is "Being able to work alongside both students and teachers on a journey to finding their "why" and to continue the passion of teaching and learning for all". Mr. Vroom's favorite quote is by Dr. Seuss - "To the world you may be one person; but to one person you may be the world." Mr. Vroom hopes to continue to grow as a leader this school year and to help facilitate learning experiences for others and himself.

Mr. Vroom is a proud father and husband. He lives in Hilliard with his wife Michelle and their 4 children; Hayden, Isabella, Aidan and Rowan. The Vroom family also enjoys playing with their Goldendoodle - Darbie! When Mr. Vroom is not cheering on his children in their school events or cheering for the CATS, he enjoys traveling, golf and spending time with family and friends. He also is an avid fan of college and professional sports. His favorite teams are Syracuse, THE Ohio State Buckeyes, Buffalo Bills and Cincinnati Bengals. 

Mrs. Samantha Althouse

Mrs. Althouse is entering her 13th year in education. She spent 10 years as a 7th grade math teacher at Dublin Davis Middle School, and one year as an Administrative Intern at Chapman Elementary before joining the Weaver team. Mrs. Althouse earned her undergraduate degree from The Ohio State University - Bachelor of Science. Mrs. Althouse then attended Miami University where she earned her M.Ed. in Educational Leadership.

Mrs. Althouse is passionate about doing things better, and is always looking for ways to improve the educational experience for kids. She loves being an administrator because she can learn and share best practices with teachers all while having a greater impact than in her own singular classroom. Mrs. Althouse also has a servant heart, and believes that there is no better feeling than helping others. Whether it is a teacher or a student that she is coaching through a difficult time or teaching about a life lesson, she just wants to leave each place/person better than when she arrived. Her favorite quote is "Have courage, be kind." - Cinderella. Mrs. Althouse hopes that the Weaver community will continue to build upon their goal of embedding the #WeaverWay culture into everything that they do. She hopes that teachers continue to take risks instructionally as they enter year two with the iPad integration. Her dream is for each student to embrace the #WeaverWay culture and take an active role in making Weaver an even better place to learn and grow! 

Mrs. Althouse is married to her husband, Keith, who is a middle school science teacher in Dublin. They have two children; Remy (2nd grade) and Bellamy (kindergarten), and a Goldendoodle named Riggins. 

Outside of the Weaver walls Mrs. Althouse enjoys her family! They spend their evenings and weekends attending their children’s activities, and they love every minute of it! The Althouse family is a sports family, so they are typically found at a sporting event whether their own children's or their favorite teams'. The family’s favorite teams include THE Ohio State Buckeyes and the Cleveland Browns! Mrs. Althouse is also a secret Disney addict, and has a small problem/obsession with custom dresses that she has made for her daughter to wear every time they visit Disney World. Just ask, she have lots of pictures!
